Burtes A. McKane

Burtes A. McKane, age 91 of Bangor, peacefully entered eternal life on Good Friday, April 2, 2010, while at the home of his younger daughter, Suzan, in San Mateo, California. Burt was born on May 26, 1918 in Lansing, Michigan, the younger son of John and Marie (Ackley) McKane. He married his high school sweetheart, Virginia Crosby, on August 24, 1941 in Lansing, and they truly enjoyed 64 happy years together until Virginia's death on February 16, 2006, one day short of her 88th birthday. Now they have eternity together in the presence of the Lord. Burt became a licensed mortician in 1942 and worked for the Gorsline-Runciman Funeral Home, Lansing. Then in 1950, Burt and Virginia took a leap of faith and purchased the Sherrod Funeral Home, Bangor from his cousins, who were the grandchildren of Bangor's long-time mortician and Burt's great uncle, Burtes Sherrod. Running the McKane Funeral Home was always a team effort until their retirement at the end of 33 years in 1983. They gave comfort and peace to hundreds of families during those years. He was a dedicated member of Simpson United Methodist Church and was active in several organizations, such as the Masons, Eastern Star, Elks and many more. They were proud of the fact that both were descended from the Mayflower Pilgrims. Surviving are his lovely daughters, Barbara (Bud) Brown of Breedsville, Suzan (Rob) Grialou of San Mateo, CA; 5 wonderful and fun-loving grandchildren, Scott (Doreen) Brown of Bangor, Jamie (Julie) Brown of Bangor, Craig (Diane) Grialou of Peoria, AZ, Steven (Melissa) Grialou of Sacramento, CA, Nicole Grialou of Sacramento; 7 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; 1 nephew; 4 nieces; 8 grandnephews; 6 grandnieces; 11 great grandnephews; and 4 great grandnieces. Besides his wife, Virginia, he was preceded in death by his parents, and older brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Mary McKane both in 2001, The family will meet friends on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-9 PM at the Bangor Chapel, D. L. Miller Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Wednesday at Simpson United Methodist Church, Bangor with Rev. Thomas A. Davenport and Rev. Sandra B. McNary officiating. Interment will be in Arlington Hill Cemetery, Bangor. The family suggest memorials to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, Hospice at Home, South Haven or the Bangor Library.
